AR WEEK: Georg Klein talks us through his PTAM tracking system

Augmented reality works best at your desktop. There’s a good reason for this. Most of the AR trickery you will have seen is where you hold up a black and white printed square marker so that your computer’s webcam can see it. The software application then recognises that pattern and generates a virtual animation on your screen on top of the real world background. Hey presto, AR magic.
The trouble, of course, is that most objects and scenes out there that …

At the end of the sessions we asked each of them what their vision for AR was when it finally does make it – its limitations and successes. So, here is the future of augmented reality …

AR WEEK: An offer you’re ready to accept?

Estate agents are not well liked, and before we get your hopes up, developments in augmented reality are not going to make them go away. There is a good chance though that AR might reduce the time you have to spend dealing with them or, more importantly, the bad ones that insist you must see a property of theirs that simply isn’t appropriate for what you’re after.
Already mobile AR has made a lot of in roads into the real estate industry. There are …

AR WEEK: Steve Feiner talks AR glasses and beyond

Professor Steve Feiner teaches a class on AR each spring at Columbia University, New York. Every year, at the beginning of the course – a course which has the words “augmented reality” in the title, he asks his students how many of them have actually heard of the phrase before. In 2008, there were maybe two or three hands in the air out of a total of 15. Last spring, the number went up to almost half – proof, Pocket-lint suggests, that …

AR WEEK: Is it really better than a top down map?

Go in to the Android Market or the iTunes App Store, search under “augmented reality” and you’ll find that at least half the results come under travel and tourism. These industries have been very quick to pick up on this emerging technology but why should that be so more than the other sectors? Which are the leading travel apps out there? Have any of them got it right yet and, if not, what’s holding them back but, most of all, …

The story so far…

The countdown to the launch of the iPad 2 began the moment the first iteration was announced. In fact, even beforehand. But now, it’s almost upon us.
In a few short hours, an Apple representative – possibly Jobs, probably Cook – will unveil the company’s new tablet to the world, and reveal its new features, unique selling points and bells and whistles, with many of them having been public knowledge for some time.
However, so much hyperbole has been talked, written and printed over the last year, with some …
